Everyone always says, “Live like today is your last,” and although I am usually a fan of cliches and think they are absolutely applicable to life, this cliche should be treated with care. Maybe you have had a life-changing experience that has given you the ability to see the hands of time constantly moving. Maybe you’ve been given a second lease on life. But chances are, most of us will never fully comprehend what it’s like to live with an actual, always present, thought of death in the forefront of our minds.
“The glass is half full.” That’s a cliche I can approve of. No matter your personal story, each of us can dwell on the negative, dark things in our lives, or we can switch our focus to the things that make us smile. Someone close to me once said, “When you wake up in the morning, you have a choice. You choose to be happy, or you choose to be sad.”
I think it’s a real test of character and person to see who in our lives can use mind over matter to make even the gloomiest of situations, just a little brighter. Who can bring light into every moment. It doesn’t happen over night. It doesn’t happen after a few weeks. It takes time, patience and dedication to look at your cup of life, acknowledge what is missing, and be content with what is present.
Start today. Choose to be happy.
